Types of coffees in Vietnam

There are two major types: Arabica and Robusta

1. Robusta

Robusta coffee is the second most important coffee species. About 39% of coffee products are produced from this type of coffee. The world’s largest exporter of Robusta coffee is Vietnam.
In Vietnam, the provinces of Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Kon Tum are specialized areas of Robusta coffee. The caffeine content in Robusta coffee is about 2-4%, while Arabica coffee is only 1-2%.

2. Arabica

There are two varieties in Vietnam: Moka and Catimor. This coffee is grown mainly in Cau Dat area (Da Lat) – the best place to grow Arabica coffee in Vietnam.

a) Moka: Aromatic, seductive, light taste. Moka is a genus of Arabica coffee, planted in France by the French in the 30s of the last century, planted in Dalat – Lam Dong. In these families, this coffee variety is the hardest to plant, requiring careful care. Moka coffee tree grows only at an altitude of 1500m so very few areas can be planted.

b) Catimor: Fragrant, slightly sour taste, twice the export price of Robusta. This is a cross between Hybrid deoxyribonucleic acid Timor and Caturra for a product called Catimor.

Quantity

In terms of output, the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa) estimated that Vietnam will produce 1.55 million tonnes of coffee in the current crop, an increase of 100,000 tonnes over the 2016-2017 season.

Price

According to the Agency of Foreign Trade (Ministry of Industry and Trade), compared with the previous season, coffee exports increased by 0.8% in volume but decreased by 10.5% in value. Exports declined mainly due to the lowest coffee beans price in the last 50 years.

For the first 10 days of November 2018, the price of Robusta coffee beans in the country increased by world prices. Compared to 30/10/2018, the price of Robusta beans increased from 0.3 to 1.4%. On 9/11/2018, Robusta beans have the lowest level of 35,300 VND / kg in Di Linh district, Lam Dong province; The highest level was 36,400 VND / kg in Cu M’gar and Ea H’leo districts of Dak Lak province and Dak Ha district in Kon Tum province.

Export facts

According to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, coffee exports in October 20118 reached 138.1 thousand tons, valued at $ 251.15 million, up 14.5% in volume and up 18.4% in value. According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), the consumption of Robusta coffee – mainly from companies for making instant coffee – is forecast to rise to record levels, thanks to the Instant coffee demand in developing country markets. It is estimated that the end of the coffee crop 2017/2018 Vietnam exported 1,797,968 tons – recorded a record high, up 196,169 tons (equivalent to up 12.3%) compared to 2016/17.
